Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Loan Repayment Program

Title: OPEN NOW! Federal Loan Repayment Program for Behavioral Health Providers

Copy: The Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Loan Repayment Program (STAR LRP) gives behavioral health providers up to $250,000 to repay school loans in exchange for working full-time for six years at an approved site. The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) oversees this new program designed to help recruit and retain a more diverse set of behavioral health providers focused on combating the substance use disorder (SUD) epidemic.

New Applicant Eligibility and Disciplines

The STAR LRP includes additional disciplines for those working to help patients overcome substance use disorder.

For STAR eligibility, you must be:

  • A United States citizen, national, or permanent resident (includes lawful permanent residents or Green Card holders);
  • Fully licensed, credentialed in an eligible discipline, or a registered SUD professional; and
  • A full-time employee at a STAR LRP-approved facility.

The STAR LRP is open to a wide range of providers in direct treatment or recovery support for substance use disorder patients. Behavioral health clinicians, paraprofessionals, clinical support staff, and others trained in substance use disorder treatment are encouraged to apply. Visit the STAR LRP page on HRSA.gov for a list of eligible disciplines.

New Eligible Site Types

Visit the STAR LRP page on HRSA.gov for a list of more than 20 eligible site types. Applicants must work full-time at a STAR LRP-approved facility located in either:

  • A county with a three-year overdose mortality rate greater than the national average (as calculated by HRSA).
  • A mental health Health Professional Shortage Area.

Don’t know if your site is approved? Site eligibility criteria are available on the STAR LRP–approved Facility page. Points of Contact for eligible sites may obtain STAR LRP facility approval through the BHW Program Portal.
