Program Highlights

Advanced Nursing Education Programs

Activities include several traineeships and an expansion program, with the aim of increasing the size of the advanced nursing workforce.

Behavioral Health Training Programs

Several initiatives aim to enhance the quality of education and clinical training in behavioral health, and to increase the number of practicing behavioral health professionals and paraprofessionals, with an emphasis on the integration of behavioral health into primary care.

Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program

Helps nation’s freestanding children's hospitals maintain their graduate medical education programs; supports the education and training of residents, and enhances their ability to care for low-income patients.

Primary Care Training and Enhancement Programs

Strengthen the primary care workforce by increasing the number of physician residents and physician assistant students trained in primary care.

Health Careers Pipeline and Diversity Programs

Aim to increase the diversity of the nation’s health professions workforce and to offer high quality, culturally-competent care within underserved communities; efforts focus on the recruitment, retention, and support of trainees from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented backgrounds leading to increased distribution of health professionals in high need areas.

Nursing Education and Practice Programs

Support the development and implementation of innovative practice models that use collaborative inter-professional teams comprised of nurses and other health professionals.

Oral Health Training Programs

Enhance access to dental health services by increasing the number of oral health care providers working in underserved areas and improving training programs for oral healthcare providers.

Physician Residency and Physician Assistant Primary Care Training and Expansion Program

Strengthens the primary care workforce by supporting enhanced training for future primary care clinicians, teachers, and researchers; promotes primary care practice in rural and underserved areas.

Public Health Training Programs

Strengthen the competencies of the current and future public health workforce; enhance the quality and coordination of preventive and integrative medicine residency programs across the nation.

Research Fellowship Programs

Support research fellowships; ensure a diverse and highly trained workforce; prepare qualified individuals for careers and leadership roles in primary health care research.

Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Program

Supports new and expanded primary care and dental residency programs; improves the distribution of this workforce into underserved communities and populations, and seeks to increase health care quality and overall access to care.
