FAQ: Advanced Nursing Education – Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (ANE-SANE) Program

Eligibility

Are current awardees eligible to apply?

Yes. Current awardees are eligible to apply as a Competing Continuation applicant.

Do I have to be a university or institution of higher education to be eligible to apply?

No. Applicants are not required to be an institution of higher education to apply for this funding opportunity. Please see the eligibility criteria on pages 6-7 of the NOFO for additional eligibility information.

Program requirements

Can applicants use this grant funding to staff additional positions?

Yes. Applicants should design roles according to the needs of the project, ensuring to align the design to the purpose, objectives, and requirements outlined in the NOFO.

The required positions are project director and project coordinator. The project coordinator position is the only required FTE.

Can the project coordinator position be filled by two people at .50 FTE each to equal one 1.0 FTE?

Yes. The project coordinator position can consist of multiple individuals as long as the position is giving 100% effort in pursuit of the program purpose. You must clearly indicate in the application that the role is being fulfilled by multiple individuals. You must clearly state your plan in the budget justification to ensure that the budget meets the requirements and review criteria listed in the NOFO.

Can the project director have another job?

Yes. The project director is not required to be a FTE and can be involved in other projects.

However, the project director can only receive funding support from the ANE-SANE grant that is equivalent to the level of effort put forth to execute the ANE-SANE project.

Can we use grant funds for capital expenses such as construction?

No. You cannot use grant funds for capital expenses. However, minor alteration and renovation is allowed.

The NOFO states that accreditation costs and fees are not allowed. Does that refer to the program accreditation or costs for trainees?

ANE-SANE funds may not be used to support accreditation costs for the applying institution. However, funds can be used to pay for SANE certification for participants and trainees.

Can we use these grant funds to pay for education and training for our key personnel?

Yes. Program staff may participate in training as trainees within the parameters of the program requirements, goals, and objectives.

Can we include Physician Assistants as trainees?

No. Trainees must be enrolled as a student in an advanced nursing education program, including Advanced Practice Registered Nursing and Forensic Nursing Programs, or be a registered nurse (RN) with an active and unencumbered license and currently practicing as either a:

  • Generalist RN
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
  • Forensic Nurse

Are we allowed to use grant funds to pay release time?

No. You cannot use grant funds to pay for release time for faculty and trainees. For example, you cannot pay faculty for time conducting research not directly related to grant project with grant funds. You also cannot pay to cover an RN’s salary so that they can be released from scheduled clinical work to participate in the grant project.

Application

How should we complete the Maintenance of Effort (MOE) attachment?

Please refer to the instructions on page 10 of the NOFO. A sample table is provided on page 22-23 of the NOFO that you may use when submitting this attachment.

Where should I add SANE completers on the ANE Program Specific Data Forms?

You should add SANE completers under the “Additional Specialty” column and “Additional Degree/Certificate” row on the ANE Program Specific Data Form.

I am not a university or a hospital. What accreditation documentation should I submit?

Your accreditation/approval documentation should include all required items for the type of document you submit. Please refer to pages 20-21 of the NOFO for types of accreditation/approval documentation that are acceptable for attachment 1.
