Our workforce programs help strengthen the health workforce and connect skilled health care providers to communities in need, improving the health of people who need it most.

We offer scholarship, loan, and loan repayment programs to individuals and award grants to organizations (For example, schools, hospitals, health departments).

Children's Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Payment (CHGME) Program

Program Type: Grant

Purpose: Educate and prepare the pediatric health workforce to serve children and innovate in the area of pediatrics to compensate for the disparity in the level of federal graduate medical education funding for freestanding children’s teaching hospitals versus other types of teaching hospitals.

Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP)

Program Type: Loan Repayment

Purpose: Provide loan repayment assistance to faculty members from economically and environmentally disadvantaged backgrounds with eligible health professions degrees or certificates to serve at eligible academic institutions.

Medical Student Education (MSE) Program

Purpose: Support community-based primary care residency programs to train primary care physician and dental residents in underserved and rural settings.

Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program

Program Type: Loan Repayment
Topic: Behavioral or Mental Health; Medicine; Nursing
Purpose: Recruit and retain medical, nursing, and behavioral/mental health clinicians with specific training and credentials providing pediatric medical subspecialty, pediatric surgical specialty, or child and adolescent mental and behavioral health care in Health Professional Shortage Areas.

Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program

Program Type: Grant
Topic: Behavioral or Mental Health; Medicine
Purpose: Expand the number of fellows at accredited addiction medicine fellowship (AMF) and addiction psychiatry fellowship (APF) programs trained as addiction medicine specialists who work in underserved, community-based settings that integrate primary care with mental health disorder and substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and treatment services. The program encompasses both psychiatry and an addiction subspecialty for primary care doctors.

Area Health Education Centers (AHEC)

Program Type: Grant

Purpose: Develop and enhance education and training networks within communities, academic institutions, and community-based organizations.

Centers of Excellence Program (COE)

Program Type: Grant
Topic: Behavioral or Mental Health; Medicine; Oral Health
Purpose: Improve access to culturally appropriate health care by increasing the number of underrepresented minority students who enter and graduate from health professions training programs.

Health Professions Student Loans (HPSL)

Program Type: School Loan Program

Purpose: Assist accredited public schools and educational intuitions in offering low-interest loans to degree-seeking students in the health care field.

Loans for Disadvantaged Students (LDS)
